Crypto funding settlement times: 1h, 4h and 8h explained
Funding is paid only at scheduled settlement events, but the interval is not always eight hours. Learn how to count payments and check the current contract schedule.
A rate without its interval is incomplete. +0.0100% every hour is eight times the simple daily cost of +0.0100% every eight hours, even though the number shown beside the contract looks identical.
Common schedules
Eight-hour contracts commonly settle at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC. Four-hour contracts add 04:00, 12:00 and 20:00 UTC. Two-hour and hourly schedules produce correspondingly more events.
Those are common grids, not a promise for every symbol. The contract details page and next-funding timestamp are the operational source of truth.
How to count settlements
A position pays or receives funding when it is included in a settlement, not merely because it was open for a certain number of hours. A position opened just after 08:00 UTC and closed before 16:00 UTC on an eight-hour contract normally crosses no funding event. The same position closed just after 16:00 UTC crosses one.
For planning, count the actual timestamps inside the proposed holding window. Multiplying “days × three” is only valid for a stable eight-hour schedule and a position open across every event.
Intervals can change
Some venues dynamically shorten settlement frequency when funding reaches a cap or floor. OKX documents a progression among eight-, four-, two- and one-hour schedules for eligible crypto perpetuals. Binance and Bybit also document circumstances in which contracts can switch to hourly settlement.
A shorter interval does not necessarily mean the same rate is charged more often without adjustment—the next rate is recalculated—but it does mean a stale assumption can materially misstate the scenario.
Avoid settlement-edge assumptions
Do not rely on opening or closing within the last seconds around settlement to avoid a payment. Exchanges need time to process the event, and Bybit explicitly warns that activity within five seconds before or after funding time does not guarantee inclusion or exclusion.
The vibgg funding table stores each venue's reported interval. Use the next timestamp shown by the exchange for execution decisions and this site's interval-normalised figures for comparison.
